Some of obama staunchest allies are confident a truce is near. this is unlikely to happen, because iran, an ally, could provide aid. im convinced that this is the hidden subtext in the spreading popular distrust of science that is such a significant feature in our public life a great many americans, in particular, have come to see scientific claims as simply one more rhetorical weapon brandished by competing factions in the social and political struggles of our day. the numbers suggest the tea party is rapidly sliding back into fringe status yet its disproportionate influence over the political conversation is as strong as Carol Burnett ever.
